ANM Through My Lens graphic about food, sensory regulation and belonging

When food becomes comfort, safety and belonging

From the ANM archive · Original Instagram post: 3 August 2026

A familiar food can be more than food. It can be routine, sensory comfort, memory and a small way of feeling at home.

This archive piece grew from an ANM lived-experience reflection on an unexpected comfort-food combination. The point is not to make every preference into a diagnosis. It is to pause before judging what we do not yet understand.

Curiosity before judgement

For neurodivergent people and their families, food can carry sensory needs, culture, belonging and safety. A move, a new school, a difficult day or a crowded environment may change what feels manageable. That does not make a person difficult or ungrateful.

In homes, schools and shared spaces

  • ask before commenting on someone’s food
  • avoid using shame to make a person try, finish or explain a meal
  • make room for familiar options where possible
  • remember that accessibility can look ordinary from the outside

Sometimes the kindest response is simply: “That works for you. Tell me what would help.”
