Support is access: helping learners thrive at school

From the ANM archive · Original Instagram post: 30 July 2026

A learner may be working far harder than anyone can see. Support is not a favour; it is access.

When schools recognise different ways of learning, communicating, moving and regulating, they can remove barriers before a learner is pushed out of participation. The aim is not to lower meaningful expectations. It is to make those expectations reachable.

What access can look like

  • extra time or a quieter place for a task
  • clear, step-by-step instructions
  • planned movement or sensory breaks
  • more than one way to show learning
  • consistent support without public embarrassment

A question for every school

Instead of asking why a learner is not fitting a fixed system, ask: what barrier is this learner meeting, and what can we change? That shift is where inclusion becomes practical.
