Introducing DCD/Dyspraxia Week

From the ANM archive · Teaching Tuesday

This week, ANM is opening up a conversation about DCD—Developmental Coordination Disorder. You may also hear it called dyspraxia.

DCD affects movement and coordination. It can make ordinary things like writing, dressing, using tools, playing sport, organising materials or keeping up with a task take more effort and planning than people realise.

That does not mean a learner is lazy, careless or less capable.

It means they may need understanding and practical support.

For teachers, a good starting point is simple: give clear instructions, break tasks into manageable steps, demonstrate where helpful, allow extra time, and offer different ways for a learner to show what they know.

Over the week, we’ll explore DCD at school, at work, at home and in our communities.

What have you heard DCD or dyspraxia called in your community?
