When “I’m fine” means “I’m overwhelmed”

From the ANM archive · Family Friday · Original social post: 24 July 10:00

Sometimes…

“I don’t know.”

“I’m fine.”

Silence.

Walking away.

Fidgeting.

Shouting.

Crying.

Laughing at the “wrong” moment.

These aren’t always bad behaviour.

Sometimes they’re the only way a child knows how to say:

“Everything feels too much.”

Children with ADHD or autism don’t need us to guess perfectly.

They need us to stay curious.

Instead of asking,

“What’s wrong with you?”

Try,

“What happened?”

Or,

“How can I help right now?”

The goal isn’t perfect parenting.

The goal is creating a home where children feel safe enough to discover their emotions without shame.
