ANM Bites: Everyday Inclusion

ANM BITES

Small reads. Real shifts.

One idea to carry with you: someone does not need to look distressed for a space to be difficult to access.

ANM Bites brings together accessible ideas, lived experiences and practical guidance for building neuroinclusive families, schools, workplaces, communities and leadership across Africa.

Six bites to begin with

No jargon. No shame. Just a better place to start.

Each bite is designed to open a conversation, not close one. Adapt the language, examples and links to your community before publishing.

Bite 01

Clear is kind

Say what is happening, what comes next and what “done” looks like. Clarity is not being controlling; it is making participation less stressful.

Bite 02

Difference is not disrespect

A person’s eye contact, movement, tone, pace or need for space may not match an expectation. Curiosity gets us further than assumptions.

Bite 03

Regulation comes before learning

When a person is overloaded, more pressure rarely creates more capacity. Lower the demand, reduce the noise and offer a calm route back in.

Bite 04

Sensory access is access

Noise, light, heat, crowding, smell and fabric can change whether a space is usable. A quieter option can be the difference between being present and being able to participate.

Bite 05

Dignity cannot wait

A formal diagnosis may help some people access services. Respectful communication, practical adjustments and safety should not depend on one.

Bite 06

Ask, don’t assume

“What would make this easier?” is a strong starting question. The person who lives the experience is an expert in what gets in the way.

Put a bite into practice

One small change, today.

At home

  • Put the next two steps where everyone can see them.
  • Offer a choice between two workable options.
  • Repair after a hard moment instead of adding shame.

In learning spaces

  • Give an instruction in writing as well as aloud.
  • Build in a calm reset before a situation escalates.
  • Notice progress and strategy, not only neatness or speed.

At work and in community

  • State the purpose, deadline and next action clearly.
  • Share information in more than one format.
  • Challenge jokes and labels that make people less safe to participate.

Sources and limits

ANM Bites is educational, not a diagnostic or treatment service. Use locally appropriate professional support for individual health, education or safeguarding concerns. For broader reading, start with WHO information on neurodevelopmental conditions and UNESCO’s guidance on removing barriers to inclusion in education. Adapt each bite with local expertise and lived experience before publication.
