🧠 ANM Mindset Monday | Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is not an illness—it is a different way of experiencing, processing, and interacting with the world. 🌍💙
ASD is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition that affects communication, social interaction, behaviour, and sensory processing. It is estimated that around 1 in 100 people worldwide are autistic, and autism presents differently in every individual.
Early Signs of Autism
Some signs may become noticeable in the first few years of life, including:
✅ Limited eye contact or social smiling
✅ Not responding to their name by 9–12 months
✅ Delayed speech or language development
✅ Limited pointing, waving, or shared play
✅ Repetitive movements such as hand-flapping or lining up toys
✅ Strong preference for routines and predictability
✅ Heightened or reduced sensitivity to sounds, textures, lights, or touch
Important to Remember
🔹 Autism is a spectrum—no two autistic individuals are exactly alike.
🔹 Many autistic people also live with ADHD, anxiety, epilepsy, or learning differences.
🔹 Girls and women are often diagnosed later because they may learn to “mask” or camouflage their challenges.
🔹 With understanding, early support, and inclusive environments, autistic individuals can thrive and achieve meaningful independence.
Mindset Monday Reflection
Instead of asking, “How can we help autistic people fit into our world?” perhaps we should ask, “How can we create a world where everyone belongs?”
💙 Awareness leads to understanding.
💙 Understanding leads to acceptance.
💙 Acceptance creates inclusion.
