When an autistic person cannot meet a demand

Teaching Tuesday: When “I can’t” is mistaken for “I won’t.”

An autistic person may look like they are refusing a task, ignoring an instruction or being difficult.

But they may be overwhelmed—not unwilling.

Sometimes they have spent the whole day masking: hiding stress, copying others, forcing eye contact, managing noise, following social rules and trying to appear “fine.”

That effort can be exhausting.

Before we call it defiance, let’s ask:

“What is making this hard right now?”

Understanding autism means looking beyond behaviour.
